Jack Logan

Red Wing, and all our fans owe a great debt of grattitude to Jack Logan. Not only for being a mean Bass player and making all that plum wine, but also for volunteering his outstanding PA equipment. Amps., speakers, microphones, and also a "hot" mike like those used by all the professional bluegrass boys. It's a great addition to the show. Thank you very much Jack, we're forever in your debt.

Players were: Marvin Payne, Andy Adams, Oren Siders, Sandy Siders, Rusty Dickerson, Develle Sellers, Steve Parker, Dan Kelhoffer, Jack Logan, Keith Rowell.

Paul Heath

Paul Heath has become one of our most prolific performers since we moved to the courthouse square. His strong vocals and distinctive style are a real treat. He says that 20 years on a Nuclear Sub gave him plenty of time to practice. I particularly like his John Prine renditions. He starts us off singing "Evening Train".

Players were: Paul Heath, DC Sellers, Paul Jacobs, Oren Siders, Sandy Siders, Don Winebarger, Charlette Mullis, Alan Wilkinson, Keith Rowell.

Dan Kelhoffer is practicing a few of us up to play at the Dairy Festival June 6th so check that out. We'll be called the Dennis Station Boys or something like that. Oren and Sandy were there Looking fit and singing and playing "like fire". Jack Logan, where have you been? We aint seen you lately.

The second show at the new location was lots of fun. Dan Kelhoffer is warming us up for his show at the Dairy Festival on June 6th. Marvin Payne played some very nice guitar and bass and backup singing in spite of his allergies. We had another new singer this week, Paul Heath. Paul Doesn't hold back! He did some powerful singing and playing. Just have a listen to the video above. Oren and Sandy and filled out the show with their usual perfection. Like I said, lots of fun.

Red Wing is trying out a new location. Sarting Tuesday May 12th we will meet at the above location on the courthouse square. In This building we hope to be better able to control acoustics, and offer food and drinks. We love the plaza, (especially the stage!) but food isn't allowed in the auditorium. This is our attempt to get all the important parts in one place.

Honors and awards are due to:

  • Shelagh Fagan for assembling the people and resources
  • Better Home Town for paying the utilities
  • Stewart Arron for use of the space
  • Edge Farley for loaning chairs and tables
  • Hallman Wood products and
  • Oren Siders for hay bales to serve as accoustic panels
  • Chuck Haley and
  • The Peoples Bank for the Stage

Honors and awards also to all the people who have helped us reach this point for the last year:

We got off to a slow start this week. We miss Raymond and now have to re-train ourselves to try to take up the slack. We tested out a few new songs and even liked some of them.

Shelagh Fagan has been working hard putting all the pieces togeather for a Bluegrass, Beer, and Bar-B-Que venue downtown. We will move the Red Wing Show there soon. It's gonna be great to be able to eat and drink and hear some good tunes all at the same time. I'll keep you posted.

In Memory of Raymond James

Raymond James died Saturday April 18th, 2009. He'd been ploughing with his tractor to plant a garden and was about to visit his hunting property when Dawn urged him to stay put because he looked like he was dizzy. Before she could get off the phone to call the medics, he was laying on the ground. They revived him again in the ambulance on the way to the hospital but he wouldn't stay.

We loved him. He is a fixture throughout these pages. He provided guidance and inspiration to scores of music lovers. I sincerely wish I had his ability as a performer to satisfy audiences and make everyone in the room feel welcome and lighthearted.

Georgia has lost a jewel in this native son. He kept up a southern tradition of playing and singing rural folk styles that is an American Tradition and a Cultural Treasure. His love and knowledge of 1930's and 40's country music was first hand and vast. But it was his unique personal style that made him the precious gem that he was. He's left a tremendous wake in his passing.

Kiwanis Benefit 09

Mike Cameron, Keith Rowell, Paul Jacobs

Thanks a million to Paul Jacobs and Mike Cameron for playing at the Kiwanis Benefit. Mike kicked us off with a rousing "Shady Grove". I slowed it down with a bluesy version of Bill Monroe's "Good Woman's Love". Paul and Mike ventured into Jazz territory with Stephan Grapelli's "Minor Swing" while I did my best to keep up. Then we capped it all off with "Whiskey 'Fore Breakfast" double time. Or as Paul would put it "lively". It was sure a lot of fun.

Congratulations to Dappa Smith and Tom Rossiter for putting on a fine show. Some people told me it was the best yet.

Red Wing # 21

We have no actual jam photos for this week. So here's a shot of the old bank in downtown Eatonton just a couple of blocks from the Plaza Arts Center.

Players were: Jack Logan, David Amonette, Oren Siders, Sandy Siders, Dan Kelhoffer, Mike Cameron, Mike Koester, Keith Rowell.

Song List: Amazing Grace, Angel Band, Bury me Beneath the Willow, Colorado Breakdown, Columbus Stockade Blues, Elzic's Farewell, Fireball Mail, Great Speckled Bird, Handsome Molly, I'll Fly Away, Jacky Tar, Jimmy Brown, Move it on Over, Old Home Place, Old Joe Clark, The Other Side of Town, Wabash Cannonball, When the Roses Bloom in Dixieland, Whiskey B'fore Breakfast.

Just as a side note: you can tell from this recording how the gallery's acoustics are inferior to the stage of the main auditorium. This recording was made in the gallery, a room with carpet and upholstered furniture, but still with hard surfaces on the walls and ceiling. Compared to show numbers 18,19, and 20 which were recorded on stage, this one "#21" sound like it was made in a tin can. It's apparently the theater curtains in the auditorium that absorb the echoes, not to mention the great acoustics of the hall it's self.

And it was very nice to meet for the first time Mike Koester the Dobro Player. Check out the attached media for a sample of Mike's Dobro playing. What a treat!
