Monroe claims authorship of the melody, although it appears it was Monroe’s attempt at adapting his Uncle Pen Vandiver’s version of “Sleepy Eyed John.” Monroe used an open D-tuning on his mandolin (F#A, DD, aa, ac#) for the piece, in imitation of the cross-tuning of Uncle Pen’s fiddle.
