Mabou Ceilidh, Cape Breton
Keith Rowell participates in a Ceilidh (Kay-lee) at the historic society in Mabou, Cape Breton Island, Nova Scotia, Canada. 2010 Yes the guitar is out of tune, the party was nearly over before I got this borrowed, nylon string guitar to behave. But thanks be to James Ennis and Shawn Crockard who loaned me the steel string guitar and case. I managed to get some tunes in before the night was over.
The rocky shore is at White Point in Cape Breton at a place called "the two tittles". See the entire photo set from Nova Scotia here full screen slideshow
Ceilidh (Kay-lee) is the Scottish word for a kitchen party with dancing music and story telling.

Old Time Jam in Sautee
I ran across the Debut Jam of this event on June 27th in Sautee. I had been there the night before to see "The Buzzard Mountain Boys" and "Barefoot Creek", and learned about the jam from the host Steve Welsch.
This troupe of musicians played old time, clawhammer banjo style, contra dance music that is a predecessor to Bluegrass music. Rather than taking you back to 1955, it was more like 1855. It was a hell of a treat! Players were, Steve Welsch, Richard Averack, Walter Daves, Jeanie Daves, Lynda Averack, Debbie Welchel, Joe Welchel, Mark Baker.
And to top it all off, Charles Brasseale (770-652-2435) had some of the best Bar-B-Que I've ever eaten. Those of you from around the Lake Country will know what I mean when I say it was on a par with our former "Peach's Bar-B-Que". His chicken was tender and juicy and very smokey, it takes alot of close attention to avoid drying out chicken. It was delicious and the pork was just awesome!
We had a wonderful afternoon in Sautee. Thanks very much you guys, best wishes for all your future events, and happy pickin!

Red Wing on Hold / Seeks New Space
Red Wing sessions are suspended as of March 5th 2010.
The 113 Jefferson space is under contract to a new tenant. That's good news for Eatonton. We are steadily building that "critical mass" of economic activity that makes for a vibrant, thriving, community with higher quality of life components like restaurants and shops.
That means Red Wing is looking for new digs.
Ideally, we would hold our jams in a BarBeQue restaraunt, located on the courthouse square. It would be big enough to hold 60+ diners, sell beer and wine, and have room to store sound equipment permanently, and have a big shade tree in the parking lot with hay bales and singing horses. If you are planning such an endeavor (or anything similar) please contact me.
Failing that tall order, If your existing restaurant would like to host a bunch of musicians to get together and jam at your store once a week, it's a good way to increase traffic on those slow nights, and spread notoriety of your store through new channels. Call me and lets keep this train rolling in our community, before it rolls on to somewhere else.

Red Wing #67
Oren Siders, Sandy Siders, Isaac Hooley
David Balangee, Sandy Siders, Isaac Hooley, Oren Siders
Our special treat this week was not only the person to travel the furthest distance, (from Idaho) but he introuduced us to the "Bones" instrument. A traditional Celtic and generally old time instrument, like spoons but different. Isaac played Bass quite nicely as well. It was alot of fun as always.
