Red Wing # 12

Players this week were Raymond James, Oren and Sandy Siders, Paul Jacobs, Jack Logan, Keith Rowell, and Mike Cameron. Mike put some nice polish on Bill Monroe's "Cherokee Shuffle" and we even got about half way through "Dusty Rose".
.
The recorder and camera both worked this week. It doesn't look like Boomp3 (our audio server) is ever comming back online though. Considering they were free, I can't complain.

Here's a little Nancy Blake tune I got in before everyone arrived.

What is this song that Oren is playing?

Red Wing # 11

Players this week were Raymond James, Oren and Sandy Siders, Paul Jacobs, Keith Rowell and Dan Kelhoffer. It was a very fun night, everybody's voices seemed in top shape and we got some nice harmonies on a few oldies. It was very nice to see Dan Kelhoffer again and he graced us with a cool rag about "Gracie Speed" among others.

Raymond played the first song he ever wrote back when he was 11. That was cool, none of us had ever heard that one before. Of course we did the usual race around the track on "Whiskey b'fore breakfast".

Recording efforts disappointed again this week. But thanks to Oren's microphone cords we had sound through the house system so that was cool and a lot easier than lugging around an amp.

REDWING song lyrics

the Birdtail King

This charming old song which is the namesake of our project is about an Indian maid longing for her love who is at war. It's an old standard from the 20's to 40's. Besides being a famous song, it refers to our local Indian heritage. The local Creek Indian Chief who represented his tribe in New York in the 1700's was "the Birdtail King". The famous "Rock Eagle" effigy is here, as are the thousands of Golden Eagles it pays homage to. I've counted over 70 in less than an hour directly over my house whirling and gliding in the updrafts, all heading west into the setting sun. It's pretty dramatic. The lesser known "Rock Hawk" effigy is less than 20 miles from the Rock Eagle nearer Lake Oconee. melody.

REDWING
There once was an Indian maid
A shy little prairie maid
Who sang away, a love song gay
While on the prairies she whiled away the day

She loved a warrior bold
This shy little maid of old
But brave and gay he rode away
To a battle far away.

(Chorus)
Now the moon shines bright tonight on pretty Redwing
The breezes sighing, the night birds crying
The moon shines bright on pretty Redwing
Her brave is sleeping, and Redwing's weeping
Her heart away.

She watched for him day and night
She kept the camp fires bright
And under the skies each night she would lay
And dream about his coming by and by

(Chorus)

But when all the braves returned
The heart of Redwing yearned
For far far away her warrior gay
Fell bravely in the fray

(Chorus)

Players this week were Raymond James, Oren Siders, Paul Jacobs, Keith Rowell and Tom Turner. It was great to have you Tom, you did a really nice job on "Wildwood Flower".

Sorry, no photos or videos this week. Audio service is still offline as well. So here's an old photo instead.

Red Wing # 9

David

Dan Kelhoffer

Oren Siders

We had two new musicians this week, Dan Kelhoffer and David. Dan did a very nice rendition of "I've got friends in low places" and " Me & Bobbie McGee" among others. David definitely knows his way around a guitar. The audio recorder suffered from a loud hum this week and none of the recordings were salvagable.

Players were Oren and Sandy, Raymond James, Paul Jacobs, Keith Rowell, David ?? and Dan Kelhoffer.

Paul Jacobs, Somebody's Walking on my Grave

Bob Simon.

Sandy Siders' lovely voice is featured here in "Let me rest".

Bob Simon joined us this week and played banjo and fiddle. We get to see this guy once a year during deer season. He's possibly gonna join us on the 13th so you won't want to miss that. The song "Somebody's Walking on My Grave" was written by Dawn and Raymond. I really like this song. I regret that I missed Sandy's photo but she was outside when the camera came out.

Players were Oren and Sandy, Raymond James, Paul Jacobs, Keith Rowell and Bob Simon.

Red Wing #6

Players this week, Jack Logan, Oren and Sandy, Raymond James, Keith Rowell, Grady Minter, and a new face, Marvin Payne. Grady played some banjo for us and we were very glad to have him. We don't get to see him all that often. Marvin played some fine guitar and bass, showed us some cool licks on "man of constant sorrow", and played Fleetwood Mac tunes on his bass. I hope we see alot more of you Marvin.

Red Wing #4

We had a big boom in attendance this week. Both players and audience. Players were, Oren Siders & Sandy, Paul Jacobs, Raymond James, David Amonette, Keith Rowell.

I got the recorder to work this week but I failed to get most of the pictures to take. You guys have to remind me to take more pictures.

45 songs and jokes from show #4 follow. Please critique these songs with comments. I'ld start that critique with the fact that the recordings are so poor. I'll work on improving that in the future.

Some have links to Lyrics and videos at the end.

Red Wing #3

Attendance more than doubled this week to 5. Growth is exponential!

Paul Jacobs, Jude Martincic, Donna Brelsford, and I talked about including some country instruments in the upcomming performance of the Reynolds Chorus.

Paul Jacobs

I tried out the recorder but no luck this week. Sorry Paul.

The following is a recording of Micheal Cameron and Keith Rowell from 2007.

Red Wing #2

The turnout this week was twice as many as last week. Two people came.

Paul Jacobs played mandolin like a fiend! (he's notorious for his "lively" tempos). He also gave David and I some great lessons in how to transpose songs from one key to another. Unfortunately I didn't get his photo this week. I'll get it next week though.

David Amonette played some great guitar and sang some Uncle Dave Mason and Norman Blake tunes, not to mention everything from Jim Croche to the Beetles as well.

David Amonette

The show will probably be changed to tuesday nights within the next two weeks so watch this site for details.

Premier Show Sept 25th 2008

The Plaza Arts Center Eatonton

In the midst of financial cotastrophie on wall street this week, playing songs from the great depression seemed only natural. Raymond James and Keith Rowell Played and sang random old stuff like "you are my flower", "little georgia rose", and a wonderful original written by James and Dawn Cole, "someone's walking on my grave".

I'll make a point to add photos and sound clips to this site each week in future posts...
